Famous Pawikan Festival in Morong Palawan

Pawikan Festival 2015 in Morong, Bataan
                   Posted on October 6,2016

Celebration of each festival shows how beautifully diverse our cultures and traditions are.

The last festival I attended was this year’s Sandugo Festival in Bohol just last August. While most festivals are rooted in Christianity dating back to the Spanish colonial period, there are a few whose main objective is to give awareness and importance in preserving the environment. And the Pawikan Festival in Morong is one of those.

Support the Pawikan Festival

The Pawikan Festival was organized to intensify the information campaign and generate public awareness on the importance of endangered marine turtles (mostly from the Olive Ridley specie) in our eco-system.

This weeklong Pawikan Festival celebration is highlighted by a ceremonial releasing of Pawikan hatchlings in the open sea headed by no less than the Bataan Governor Albert Garcia.

These marine turtles help in maintaining ecological balance in international waters. The manure of the marine turtles serves as nutrient in the ocean. It acts as a fertilizer on seagrass beds.

And off they go!

Morong is fast becoming a marine sanctuary. Even the Pawikan Conservation Center is also located in Morong which is manned by former poachers and turtle egg collectors who eventually turned into conservation advocates. Their duty is to secure the eggs laid during the nesting season and transfer them into the hatchery for breeding.

The Pawikan Festival is recognized as one of the best tourism events by ATOP and DOT in the reclassified Eco-Environmental Tourism Category (Provincial Level).

During the Pawikan Festival event, Koro Bangkal Magbikin of Bataan which are composed of Aeta children of Brgy. Bangkal in Abucay performed a beautiful song number. They were formed through the initiative of the Bataan Tourism Council Foundation, Inc., the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish and the Bataan Provincial Tourism Office.

This festival won’t be complete without other activities like a street dancing competition where some participants were dressed in turtle-like costumes and colorful ensembles.

There are other activities such as a Walk For A Cause, Trade Fair, Beach Volleyball, Graffiti Painting Contest and more.

What I learned about the Pawikan Festival is that it isn’t enough to just attend the festival and join the merry festivities. We, us citizens, should actually take action and help in preserving the environment. We should educate everyone (young ones and young once alike) on why we should save the marine turtles, how to preserve them, and explain the positive effects it will bring to the environment. We all should act as Pawikan Guardians and keep these marine turtles away from poachers and other forms of danger. The Pawikan Festival is meant to create positive noise – to bring attention to this wonderful cause and to ultimately be able to get added assistance. I encourage everyone to support this noble cause!

The event is a joint project of the provincial tourism office, Bataan Tourism Council Foundation, Inc., municipal tourism council and LGU of Morong.

The famous Mt. Samat Pilgrimage

The 12th Diocesan Mt. Samat Pilgrimage
                     Posted on October 6,2016

The 12th Diocesan Mt. Samat Pilgrimagewas held last November 28, 2015 atDambana ng Kagitingan Dambana ng Kagitingan (Mt. Samat) in Pilar, Bataan with a theme “THE HARVEST is GREAT”.
An incredible experience being part of 12th the Diocesan Mt. Samat Pilgrimage

The pilgrimage is an annual event of the Diocese since 2004 and has been attended by thousands of students and devotees.

The 12th Diocesan Mt. Samat Pilgrimage started at 10:00AM and ended around dinnertime. Thousands of students and delegates cheerfully trekked the 7-kilometer walk from the foot of the mountain to the World War II monument called, “Dambana ng Kagitingan” (Shrine of Valor). This year it was attended by more than 40,000 people from different walks of life – both from Bataan and outside Bataan, including international tourists as well.

The moment we arrived and exited our van, I immediately felt the presence of the Holy Spirit. Everyone was in high spirits and no way was anyone or anything going to dampen it. Happiness and positivity could easily be felt around the area.

Since we were invited by Bataan Tourism, we were able to go to the rooftop of the Colonnade to get a better view of the crowd at the 12th Diocesan Mt. Samat Pilgrimage.

We were even able to capture the magic hour.

The 12th Diocesan Mt. Samat Pilgrimage culminated with a spectacular display of fireworks from the Shrine Of Valor’s (Dambana Ng Kagitingan) foot.

Famous Zipline in Bataan

                Mt. Samat Zipline in Bataan
                     Posted on October 6,2016

In a span of 5 months, I’m back in Bataan! And since I wasn’t able to cover other places of interest in Bataan during my last trip back in November 2015, this time around I was happy to be able to do something new like trying the thrilling Mt. Samat Zipline in Pilar. This actually isn’t my first zipline experience but it was probably the longest I have tried.

The Mt. Samat Zipline is a few hundred meters away from the Dambana ng Kagitingan. This attraction spans about 540-meters long with a height of 43 meters above sea level starting from atop the historic Mt. Samat all the way down to Dunsulan Falls. As you zipline your way to the other end, make sure to open your eyes and enjoy the majestic view of the mountains and rice paddies.

So how do you go about zip-lining in Pilar? Read on.

Try out the Mt. Samat Zipline

When you arrive at the entrance of the Mt. Samat Zipline, pay Php350.00, Php80.00 roundtrip shuttle service to the Zipline Launch Pad and back to the entrance.

After paying, you can either take the shuttle service to the Zip Line Launch Pad or, if you are the adventurous type with lots of stamina, you can hike it.

Our group taking the shuttle. The ride takes about 10 minutes (roughly 1 kilometer) to the Zip Line Launch Pad where you will be given your gear.

At the Mt. Samat Zipline, you have the option to choose between the seated or “Superman” position. Once all geared-up, you are good to go!

If you notice, I was holding my bag since they unfortunately didn’t have a place where you can leave your things. Either leave it with your companion or bring it along just like we all did.

And away we go!

At the end of the Mt. Samat Zipline, their staff is waiting to assist you as you land on the hanging bridge.

And since you’re already there, why not try Bataan’s Tree Hopping Adventure.

For Php300, get to try the six-stage Tree Hopping Adventure. Since I was already able to try something similar to this at in Bohol, I decided to skip this one out. But some from our group took on the challenge and from the looks of it, it seems like they had an adrenaline-pumping good time!

After all the exhilarating activities, relax by the Dunsulan Falls, grab an ice cold drink and just enjoy the view. Just make sure to clean up before you leave. Let’s help in preserving and keeping the park clean.

Dunsulan Park Rates:
Php50.00 Entrance Fee
Php20.00 Per Table

Place to eat in Bataan

Places to eat in Bataan – In search of                  great food and good prices
                    Posted on October 6,2016

Let me take you on a gastronomic adventure in Bataan. Nothing super fancy, just good ‘ol great tasting food that’s friendly on the pocket, too!

Here are some cool places to eat in Bataan....

Stregato Gelateria

Who would have thought that this gelateria serves gourmet dishes? And who would have thought that I’ll be able to enjoy a gelato in Bataan? Their gelato is quite comparable to my favorite Bono Gelato in Manila!

The price range is not bad at all. Perfect for those who are on a tight budget but want to have good food instead of the usual fast-food fare.

I came in hungry and was definitely not disappointed!

Eight-Hour Roasted Beef (Php220.00)

This was a really delicious dish! Slowly braised tender beef brisket in red wine sauce with buttered rice. Great flavor and I love that the roast beef was smothered with sauce! A must try.

Grilled Salmon (Php185.00)

The salmon was grilled beautifully and the sauteed mushroom and leeks in lemon butter sauce gives this simple dish some added oomph! The buttered rice was a perfect pair. Simple yet satisfying.

Save space for some gelato. Go for the classic pistachio or salted caramel. Either way, they all taste very good! Truly, one of those must-visit places to eat in Bataan.

Plaza Mayor de Ciudad de Balanga
Balanga Bataan

Ima’s Pamangan

As the name of the restaurant implies, Kapampangan cuisine is served here. I am a bit biased when it comes to this cuisine as my grandfather hails from Apalit and I grew up eating and enjoying Kapampangan dishes.A typical mom and pop operation that serves no frills, home cooked meals at its best.

Bulalo

After a tiring day and all you need is a soothing and comforting home cooked meal. That being said, how can one go wrong with Bulalo? This simple dish’s flavor is so spot on! The broth has that real beefy goodness and the meat was absolutely tender!

Bangus with Salted Egg

Another simple yet comforting dish that goes well with the Bulalo. Cooked to golden perfection with a nice crispy skin. Eat it together with the salted egg for that home cooked goodness guaranteed to satisfy anyone’s hunger. Most definitely one of the homiest places to eat in Bataan.

Loleng’s Hu Tieu-an

This Vietnamese eatery is owned by Loleng, a Filipina who used to work in a Vietnamese refugee camp in Morong during the 70s and 80s. This roadside eatery has been serving bowls after bowls of affordable Hu Tieu for over 15 years.

Hu Tieu Special (Php50.00)

In case you are wondering, Hu Tieu is the cousin of pho – a hearty noodle soup with rice noodles in a golden brown broth with pork slices (or chicken) and topped with toasted garlic, leeks and mung beans. The salty-sweet-spicy flavors found in every spoonful is the perfect companion on a rainy day or during times when you are under the weather.

Banh Mi (Php45.00)

Loleng’s version of this sandwich has ham, cucumber, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, wansoy and liver spread in a regular bun made by her “suking” baker instead of French bread. This filling sandwich is Hu Tieu’s perfect accompaniment. Add this little food spot to your list of places to eat in Bataan.

There you have it. So, don’t work up a sweat thinking of places to eat in Bataan. This short list is more than enough.

Exploring the beautiful province of Bataan

              "Exploring the beautiful
                   province of Bataan"

.    When thinking of a place for a quick weekend getaway, Bataan is usually not your top of mind destination considering the province is just a 2 ½ hour leisurely drive from Metro Manila using a private vehicle either via NLEX or SCTEX. Could the reason for this be because Bataan doesn’t have a cool breeze like Tagaytay? Or maybe since the place doesn’t boast of white powdery sand and pristine waters?

Some people would ask, “Why Bataan?” My answer is, “Why not?”

If you just want to have a romantic stroll by the beach, a well-deserved R&R, or if you just want to appreciate and relive some of our country’s history, Bataan has got you covered! Bataan is a province that is perfect for the family with kids in tow to know more about the Philippines’ rich culture and beautiful environment. When you are in Bataan, you get closer to nature and its amazing history at the same time.

Let me tour you around Bataan’s historical landmarks and notable destinations starting off with…
BALANGA
Bataan World War II Museum

The Bataan World War II Museum is the only war museum in Bataan that was built as a tribute to the heroes of Bataan.

A diorama of the Bataan Death March can be found inside the museum.

museum.

You will also find the WW II Surrender Monument at the back of the school compound. This life-size marker was the spot where Maj. Gen. Edward King signed the instrument of surrender to Japan on April 9, 1942.

Another must see (although creepy) spot is the Torture Chamber that was used by the Japanese during WWII. According to our guide, this room was preserved as is and is practically untouched. Though padlocked, you can peep inside through a small open window.

Museum Hours:
9AM-4PM Monday to Saturday (except holidays)
Fee:
Php20 for students
Php40 for senior citizens
Php50 for regular visitors

Plaza Mayor de Ciudad de Balanga

This place carries a delightful old world charm inspired by Spanish colonial architecture. Here you will also find the City Hall, The Plaza Hotel Balanga and a few dining establishments.

I was surprised to find out that this Galeria Victoria is actually a mall!

Whether daytime or nighttime, this plaza is an absolute charmer!

Bataan, Philippines
BAGAC
Philippine-Japanese Friendship Tower

The Friendship Tower which was inaugurated back in April 8, 1975, symbolizes the lasting friendship between two peoples. It also shows that after the war, reconciliation, peace and friendship can be achieved.

Address
Located at the junction of the Gov. Linao National Road and the road to the Bagac town proper.
Zero Kilometer Death March Marker

This was the starting point of the Bataan Death March back in April 11, 1942. You will see these markers in Mariveles as well. The Fil-Am soldiers who surrendered were gathered together and then forced to do this brutal and torturous walk to Capas, Tarlac.
Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar

This heritage resort is pretty much the go-to place in Bataan nowadays. It is like a town trapped in time which instantly takes you back to the 18th-century! From the architectural structures of a bygone era that were reconstructed brick by brick and plank by plank from different parts of our country – making it a living museum of Philippine heritage. A place where old and new harmoniously meet.

You’ll undoubtedly spend a good time exploring this 400-hectare estate. The old-world ambiance and charm of Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar is its selling point. So, get your lenses and smartphones ready because you’ll be doing a lot of snapping. This beautiful place is truly picture worthy!

Apart from the place being picturesque, Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar has everything one could ask for – accommodations, a pool, private beach, spa, restaurants, gaming center, conference & banquet facilities, cultural shows and a heritage tour.

You definitely won’t regret making it your home away from home the next time you’re in Bataan. But if you’re not planning to stay, a worthwhile field trip is most definitely well worth it!

At Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, you will also see a replica of the Hotel de Orientewhich once stood in Binondo.

The facade of the new Hotel de Oriente Convention Centre was designed according to old photographs of the original hotel. The convention centre features three floors of meeting spaces.

Construction began in 2013. Completion was in 2015 just in time for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting scheduled in Bagac, Bataan. The APEC Seniors Official Meeting was held here.

Hotel de Oriente used 7 different kinds of wood: kamagong, yakal, red narra, gemelina, bangkal, balayong and molave.

PILAR
Shrine of Valor (Dambana ng Kagitingan)

The Shrine of Valor or Dambana ng Kagitingan can be seen at Mt. Samat – a historic mountain in the town of Pilar. This Memorial Cross is dedicated to fallen Filipinos and Americans during World War II.

While you’re there, make sure to take the elevator and go straight to the top of the structure. During our last few hours in Bataan, I just enjoyed the view from the Dambana ng Kagitingan’s most photographed View Deck.

It goes without saying that Bataan has exceeded my expectations! Practically everything in this place is a scene fit for a canvass. Apart from that, the province boasts of with hospitable Bataeños which I have grown fond of. I’ve yet to explore Bataan more and I look forward to coming back very soon!
